We’re very happy to answer any questions you might have about the Society – but make sure to take a look at our useful Resources and Join the Society pages first, as we try to answer as many potential questions as possible for visitors there.

If you have a question that you can’t find the answer to, no problem – we’re happy to help. And if you’d like to tell us about something Finland-related – like an event you’re planning in Scotland – then we’d love to hear from you! In all cases, please contact our Secretary on sihteeri@scottish-finnish-society.org.uk in the first instance.

Below is a run-down of our fantastic committee for 2020-2021.

I am originally from Jämsänkoski, but spend most of my life in Helsinki before moving to Edinburgh. I am a bachelor of social services and I believe there are lot of strength in the communities. At the moment I work as a Technical supervisor and in the future I wish to return back to social services.

I have been member of the Society since I moved here in 2017. I am excited to be the new Chairperson of the Finnish Scottish Society. The tradition of Expatriate Finns lives strong in Scotland and gets beautifully mixed with Scottish culture and traditions.

Markku Väätänen, Vice-Chairperson

I was born in Joensuu. I studied and worked in Tampere before moving to Edinburgh in 2005. I came here to work as an electronics engineer in a semiconductor company. I still do the same job even if the company has changed twice over the years. In my free time I enjoy Scottish outdoors on skis, on mountain bike, or simply on foot.

I joined the Scottish Finnish Society in 2008 and I have been in the committee almost from the beginning. The last few years my title has been the vice chairperson.

I grew up in Toholampi and studied in Jyväskylä. During my studies I also had a chance to live in Italy, Lithuania and the USA. Perhaps the most exciting move was in September 2019 to Scotland, where I now teach Finnish at the University of Edinburgh. I quickly found the Scottish-Finnish-Society’s events and was happy to start as the new secretary in March 2020! In my freetime you’re likely to find me in the gym, or at home knitting socks and listening to greatest hits from the 90’s. See you in our happenings!

I grew up in Kotka followed by 10 years in Tampere, studying and working in Tampere University of Technology. I’ve been in Scotland and Edinburgh for 5 years now, working as an electronics engineer in a semiconductor company. Besides geeky things I enjoy photography so my responsibility in SFS is taking photos in our events and update the website.

Hi, I’m Matt, born in Dundee but grew up in Aberdeenshire and the Highlands of Scotland. Been a member of SFS for nearly 5 years, but I’m new on the committee this year. I’m an accountant by profession, and currently lecture accountancy at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

Really excited to be on the committee and looking forward to meeting you all at an event soon.
