We’re very happy to answer any questions you might have about the Society – but make sure to take a look at our useful Resources and Join the Society pages first, as we try to answer as many potential questions as possible for visitors there.
If you have a question that you can’t find the answer to, no problem – we’re happy to help. And if you’d like to tell us about something Finland-related – like an event you’re planning in Scotland – then we’d love to hear from you! In all cases, please contact our Secretary in the first instance.
Below is a ‘who’s who’ of our current committee.
Office Bearers

Markus Ketola (Puheenjohtaja / Chair)
Whilst originally from Tampere, I have lived outside of Finland since 1994. First in Turkey and since the turn of the millennium in the UK. After Leeds, London and Belfast, I finally found my way to Edinburgh in 2019. Here I work at the University of Edinburgh where I teach Global and International Social Policy.

Laura Valkonen (Sihteeri / Secretary)
Laura is a lifelong ulkosuomalainen, having lived abroad most of her life. Settled in Edinburgh now with her partner and kids, swimming and saunas keep her in touch with her roots.

Tatu Åhlberg (Rahastonhoittaja / Treasurer)
Since moving to Scotland in August 2011, SFS has allowed me to meet with people who have a similar passion for retaining a strong link between Scotland and Finland. The similarities and differences between the two countries has led to Scotland being my home, while realising Finland still has a lot to offer to everyone. In my role as a SFS member and treasurer I hope to spread these passions further!
Ordinary Members

Jean-Loup Rebours-Smith
I have lived in Scotland since the year 2000 after spending two years as an exchange student in Vaasa with some short stays in Kuopio and Oulu. I have remained a finnophile ever since and hope to finally be fluent in Finnish some day. I love Finnish folk music and Finnish metal music and I believe happiness really is a good sauna, good friends and a plate of Korvapuusti. My passions range from writing and playing music to photography and woodworking.
